What is AEO?
How a page gets quoted.
A customer asks their phone how often an air conditioner needs a service. The answer comes back in a sentence or two, drawn from a page or two. If a voice assistant reads it out, there is no list of links at all. Either your page was one of those sources, or it was not in the running. Answer engine optimisation, AEO, is the work of being that source. Here is what answer engines are, how they pick a passage, what the work looks like on a page, and a checklist to run on your own site today.
Every claim here about how Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Perplexity, Apple and Amazon behave is cited to the company's own published pages, read on 23 September 2026. Nobody can promise you a quote, and this guide does not. Updated 24 September 2026. 9-minute read. How we write these guides.
The short answer.
AEO, or answer engine optimisation, is the work of making your website the source a system quotes when it answers a question directly instead of showing a list of links. Answer engines include Google's featured snippets and AI Overviews, voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, and the answers inside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot. In practice it means direct answers under question headings, a visible FAQ, accurate structured data and business facts that match everywhere.
What is an answer engine?
An answer engine replies to a question with the answer itself, instead of a list of pages. Your customers already use four kinds.
Featured snippets
A special box in Google results that shows the quoted passage first and the link second. Google says its systems decide whether a page makes a good featured snippet, and that you cannot mark a page up to become one[1]. A click takes the reader straight to the quoted passage[1].
Voice assistants
One answer, read aloud. Apple says the data its Applebot crawler collects powers the search technology inside Siri, Spotlight and Safari[2]. Amazon says that for Alexa questions needing up-to-date information, it may fetch live information from the web[3].
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
AI Overviews give the gist of a question, with links to explore; AI Mode takes questions that need more reasoning or comparison. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link in either[4].
ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot
Answers written on the spot, which can include links to their sources. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features[5]. Perplexity says it may visit a page while answering and link to it[6]. Microsoft says Copilot is powered by Bing's search index[7].
AEO is the work of being the source those systems quote, one passage at a time. Whether an assistant knows your business and names it at all, including from what a model learned in training, is GEO, covered in the GEO guide.
Google's own guide to its AI features names AEO and GEO, then says that from Google Search's side, optimising for AI search is still SEO. [10]
Take that as a warning against buying AEO as a separate trick. The label still names a real job: writing each page so one passage can answer a question by itself, for Google and for every system that is not Google. The side-by-side is in SEO vs AEO vs GEO.
How does an answer engine choose?
Read side by side, what the companies publish describes three stages.
It has to reach and read the page
Every answer engine starts from pages it can reach and read. For Google's AI features that means indexed, eligible for a snippet[4] and not switched off in Search Console[8]. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, except as navigational links[5]. Which crawlers to let in is covered in the GEO guide.
It judges passages as well as pages
Google said in 2020 that it could now better understand the relevance of specific passages as well as the whole page, because 'the single sentence that answers your question might be buried deep in a web page'[9]. Microsoft says Copilot breaks content into smaller pieces that can each be judged for authority and relevance[7].
None of the companies publishes exactly what tips the choice between two good passages, and Google warns that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems[10].
What does AEO look like on a page?
Six habits, each as useful to a person reading on a phone as to a machine. Google's own advice points the same way: clear headings and paragraphs, written for people[10].
Answer first
Put the direct answer in the first sentence or two under each heading, then the detail. Microsoft's checklist asks for 'sentences that make sense even when pulled out of context'[7].
Headings that are questions
Use the words a customer types or says: 'Do you take walk-ins?' rather than 'Our services'. Microsoft describes headings as chapter titles for AI, and says direct questions with clear answers mirror the way people search[7].
An FAQ you can see
Real questions from real customers, answered on the page and left open. AI systems may not render content hidden in tabs or expandable menus, Microsoft warns[7].
Text a machine can read
Hours shown only in a photo of the shop door may never be read as text. Google asks site owners to make sure important content is available in text form[4].
Structured data that matches
Code that states your business facts in the schema.org vocabulary, which Microsoft says helps AI systems understand content[7]. Google's rule is that it must truly represent the page and never describe what readers cannot see[11].
The same facts everywhere
Name, address, phone, hours and service area, identical on your site, in your structured data and on your Google Business Profile. Google asks for your real-world name as used consistently on storefront, website and stationery[12], and for up-to-date Business Profile details[4].
| Part | Written to be browsed | Written to be quoted |
|---|---|---|
| Heading | Our services | Do you take walk-ins? |
| First line | We pride ourselves on quality. | Yes, Tuesday to Saturday. Booked clients are seen first. |
| Hours | In a photo of the shop door | In text, matching the Google Business Profile |
| Structured data | None | Name, address, phone and hours, as in the footer |
Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org structured data to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. [4]
What does our own site show?
This guide follows its own advice: the short answer near the top is written to be quoted whole, the main headings are questions, and the FAQ is generated from the same file as its markup, so the two cannot disagree. Every page on pixelategroup.com carries structured data for the business, the site and the page, plus breadcrumbs and FAQ markup where they apply.
Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search from 7 May 2026 and removed their documentation on 15 June 2026. [13]
We still publish FAQ markup. Since Google retired the rich result[13], its job is simply to hand each question and answer, labelled, to any system that reads schema. We do not pretend it earns a dropdown.
We have our own example of why consistent facts matter. In the 28 days to 20 September 2026, Google Search Console showed pixelategroup.com in results 60 times for 'pixalate pricing', which is a different company's brand. When a name sits one letter from another brand's, it helps a machine when every signal agrees on which business is which. State your name, address and description the same way everywhere.
How do I check my site for AEO?
Eight checks, most of them in a browser. Start with the page that brings in the most work.
List the questions customers ask
Write down the five questions you answer most on the phone, by email and in person. Those are your headings.
Ask the answer engines
Put each question to Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot. Note who gets quoted and read the passage they used: that is what your answer is up against.
Find your answer in the first two sentences
Open the page that should answer each question. If the answer is not in the first two sentences under a matching heading, rewrite it until it is.
Check the answer is in the raw HTML
On a desktop browser, view the page source and search it for a sentence from your answer. If it is missing, it is probably added by JavaScript or sitting in an image. Our own site had this problem before its August 2026 rebuild: the raw HTML held 12 links and no navigation or footer. More in the GEO guide.
Open every tab and accordion
If key answers sit behind tabs or collapsed panels, open them up. Microsoft warns hidden content may not be rendered[7].
Test your structured data
Paste the page's address into Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator, and check that the name, address, phone and hours match the visible page exactly.
Line up your business facts
Compare your name, address, phone and hours in your site footer, Google Business Profile, Facebook page and directory listings. Fix each mismatch at its source.
The free audit runs its thirty weighted checks live against our own site, so you can watch what each one does, then scans your own site at our end and emails you the full report. It covers answer-first structure, structured data, question coverage and entity clarity, among other things.
What can AEO not promise?
A quote. The companies behind these systems choose their sources by methods they do not publish in full, and Google says even correct markup may not show up in its results[11]. Anyone who says they can make an answer engine quote you is claiming control they do not have.
What AEO does is remove the avoidable reasons to pass you over: an answer that is missing or buried, text a crawler cannot read, facts that disagree between your site and your profiles. If you would rather hand the job over, it is part of our SEO, AEO and GEO work.
Questions and answers.
Is AEO the same as SEO?
They share foundations: if a search engine cannot crawl or index a page, it is unlikely to be quoted either. SEO is about a place in a list of links. AEO is about being the passage a system quotes when it answers directly. Our guide to SEO vs AEO vs GEO sets the three side by side.
Can I do AEO myself?
Much of it, yes. Answer-first sections, question headings, a visible FAQ and consistent business facts are writing and housekeeping, and the checklist on this page shows how to test each one. Structured data and crawler access are more technical; the free audit checks both and emails you the report.
How long does AEO take to work?
There is no honest fixed timeline. A change counts only once a system has read the new version of the page, and whether it is then quoted depends partly on the other pages answering the same question. What you control is how soon the fix is made.
Does AEO matter for a local business?
It is where AEO is most concrete. Customers ask short, factual questions: are you open on Sunday, do you service my suburb, do you take walk-ins. Those answers can be lifted whole, so keep them in text on the page, under question headings, and identical to your Google Business Profile.
